Recomandare factuală în trecut
should not have or ought not to have+ past participle („nu ar fi trebuit să”)
I should not have said that.
N-ar fi trebuit să spun asta.
You shouldn’t have given him the money.
N-ar fi trebuit să-i dai banii.
They ought not to have told him.
Ei n-ar fi trebuit să-i spună.
She oughtn’t to have sold the ring.
Ea n-ar fi trebuit să vândă inelul.


Recomandare contrafactuală în trecut
should have or ought to have+ past participle („ar fi trebuit să”)
I should have finished my drink and gone home.
Ar fi trebuit să-mi termin băutura și să plec acasă.
You should have realised that he was joking.
Ar fi trebuit să-ți dai seama că glumea.
We ought to have stayed in tonight.
Ar fi trebuit să rămânem acasă în seara asta.
They ought to have taken a taxi.
Ei ar fi trebuit să ia un taxi.


Recomandarea poate fi exprimată și fără a folosi verbe modale
had better / had better not
I think I had better show this to you now.
Cred că mai bine ți-aș arăta asta acum.
You had better go tomorrow.
Mai bine te-ai duce mâine.
I had better not look at this.
Mai bine nu mă uit la asta.

NOTA BENE: Expresia „had better” nu se referă la trecut, în ciuda formei de trecut „had”.
