Probabilitatea
should, ought to
We should arrive by dinner time.
Ar trebui să ajungem până la ora cinei. (Probabil că vom ajunge până atunci)
She ought to know.
Ea ar trebui să știe. (Probabil că știe)


Probabilitatea negativă
should not, ought not to
There shouldn’t be any problem.
N-ar trebui să fie vreo problemă.
That ought not to be too difficult.
Aceasta n-ar trebui să fie ceva prea dificil.


Probabilitatea în trecut
should have, ought to have + past participle (trebuie să fi ...)
You should have heard by now that I’m leaving.
Tu trebuie să fi auzit până acum că o să plec.
They ought to have arrived yesterday.
Ei trebuie să fi sosit ieri.


Probabilitatea negativă în trecut
should not have, ought not to have + past participle
You shouldn’t have had any difficulty in getting there.
Tu n-ar fi trebuit să ai dificultăți în a ajunge acolo.
This ought not to have been a problem.
Aceasta n-ar fi trebuit să fie o problemă.


Probabilitatea contrafactuală în trecut
should have, ought to have + past participle (ar fi trebuit să fi ...)
Yesterday should have been the start of the football season.
Ieri ar fi trebuit să fie începutul sezonului fotbalistic. (Dar nu a început încă.)
She ought to have been home by now.
Ea ar fi trebuit să fi ajuns acasă până acum. (Dar nu a sosit încă.)


Certitudinea
must
Oh, you must be Sylvia’s husband.
Tu trebuie să fii soțul Silviei.
He must know something about it.
El trebuie să știe ceva despre acest lucru.


Certitudinea negativă
cannot, can’t
This cannot be the whole story.
Asta nu poate să fie toată povestea.
He can’t be very old — he’s about 25, isn’t he?
El nu poate fi foarte în vârstă — are vreo 25 de ani, nu-i așa?


Certitudinea în trecut
must have + past participle
This article must have been written by a woman.
Acest articol trebuie să fi fost scris de către o femeie.
We must have taken the wrong road.
Trebuie să o fi luat pe un drum greșit.


Certitudinea negativă în trecut
can’t have + past participle
You can’t have forgotten me.
Nu se poate ca tu să mă fi uitat.
He can’t have said that.
Nu se poate ca el să fi spus asta.


Certitudinea în viitor
will
People will always say the things you want to hear.
Lumea îți va spune mereu lucrurile pe care vrei să le auzi.
They will succeed!
Vor izbuti!


Certitudinea negativă în viitor
will not, won’t
You won’t get much sympathy from them.
Nu vei avea parte de multă compasiune din partea lor.



Probabilitatea și certitudinea se pot exprima și fără a folosi verbe modale:
bound to
It was bound to happen.
Era inevitabil să se întâmple.
You are bound to make a mistake.
Ești pe cale să faci o greșeală.


adjective: certain, likely, sure, unlikely + to-infinitive clause sau + that-clause
They were certain that you were defeated.
Erau siguri că ai fost învins.
I am not likely to forget it.
Probabil că nu am să uit asta niciodată.
